And when it’s easy to hear the consonants in speech, it’s well demonstrated in research that people listen longer and understand more. (Sorry back to school for a moment, consonants are those letters which represent certain speech sounds, like B C D P T …. )

Practically speaking, empirically we’ve found that once you get 30 or more people in a room for a meeting, depending on the room size, how spread out people are, who’s speaking, length of the session and the acoustic nature of the space like how high the ceiling is, then you’re into the territory of needing some sound reinforcement, i.e. speakers. Otherwise it’s just too quiet and difficult to hear at the back.

And of course the other scenario where speakers are needed, is when there’s video being played which has sound that’s needed to be heard.
